WHAT IS A RIF AIRSOFT GUN?

A RIF airsoft gun (Realistic Imitation Firearm) is an airsoft replica designed to look as close as possible to a real firearm in terms of appearance, size, and weight. Unlike two-tone airsoft guns, which are finished in bright, non-realistic colours (such as blue, green, or orange), RIFs are finished in authentic colours like black, tan, or camo to enhance realism. RIFs are the preferred choice for serious airsoft players, collectors, and film or training use because they provide the most authentic look and feel.

WHAT IS THE UK LAW ON AIRSOFT GUNS?

The sale of RIF airsoft guns in the UK is regulated under the Violent Crime Reduction Act (VCRA) 2006. The key points are:

  • You must be 18 or over to purchase any airsoft gun.

  • To buy a RIF (Realistic Imitation Firearm), you must hold a valid legal defence. The most common is UKARA registration, which you can obtain by proving regular attendance at insured airsoft sites. Other defences include membership of a re-enactment group, film/TV production use, or certain museum/collector exemptions.

  • Without a valid defence, you can only legally purchase a two-tone airsoft gun, which is finished in bright, non-realistic colours.

  • Retailers are legally required to check a buyer’s defence before selling a RIF.

In short: RIF airsoft guns can only be purchased by adults with a valid defence such as UKARA registration. New players without a defence must start with two-tone models until they qualify.
