AIRSOFT GUNS UK

Airsoft Guns UK are used for target shooting, skirmishing and recreational plinking — whether that's an organised game day at a site or a few hours with friends. Cost depends on the type, brand and features: entry-level models start at around £50, while high-end guns from the leading Airsoft Brands can exceed £300.

There are a few UK rules worth knowing. Airsoft Guns are not suitable for self-defence or pest control — the law strictly regulates firearms used for self-defence, and Airsoft Guns are designed purely for recreational and sporting use, so using one to defend yourself can carry legal consequences. You're permitted to shoot on your own land, and on someone else's with the landowner's confirmed permission, but never on public property. There are now a large number of shooting clubs and airsoft skirmish sites across the UK catering to every ability, and most run walk-on days with rental gear if you'd rather try before you buy.

NEW TO AIRSOFT GUNS

If you're new to the hobby, the information below should help you get your bearings. Let's start with the question we're asked most: what's the difference between a BB Gun and an Airsoft Gun? There isn't one. Both terms describe a gun that fires 6mm plastic BB pellets for skirmishing or target shooting.

The next thing to understand is power. Airsoft Guns are measured in FPS (feet per second) or joules, and UK skirmish sites set their own limits — typically around 350 FPS for automatic guns and up to 500 FPS for bolt-action Sniper Rifles with a minimum engagement distance. If you're buying for site use, check your local site's limits before you order.

You'll also see guns listed as RIF or Two-Tone. A Realistic Imitation Firearm (RIF) can be bought if you have a valid defence, most commonly UKARA registration through a skirmish site. Without one, you'll need a Two-Tone gun, which is finished in a bright colour over at least 51% of its surface.

SPRING AIRSOFT RIFLES

Spring-powered Airsoft Rifles use a manually compressed spring to propel the BB. They're single-shot, so the spring is cocked by hand before every shot. Releasing it drives a piston forward, and the compressed air behind that piston pushes the BB out of the barrel. Their simplicity and reliability make them beginner-friendly, and because there's no battery, gas or CO2 involved, they're cheap to run and virtually maintenance-free. The trade-off is rate of fire — you'll be re-cocking between every shot, which makes them better suited to target practice than fast-paced skirmishing.

ELECTRIC AIRSOFT RIFLES

Electric Airsoft Rifles, usually called AEGs (Automatic Electric Guns), are driven by an electric motor running off a rechargeable battery. They're the most popular choice on UK sites thanks to their semi-automatic and fully automatic fire, high rate of fire and consistent performance. Inside an AEG, the motor drives a gearbox containing gears and a piston assembly. Pulling the trigger completes an electrical circuit, turning the motor, which rotates the gears to compress a spring and drive the piston forward. That movement compresses air and propels the BB down the barrel. AEGs are also the most upgradeable type of Airsoft Gun, with a huge range of internal and external parts available for improving accuracy, range and trigger response.

GAS AIRSOFT RIFLES

Gas and CO2 airsoft rifles are powered by compressed gas — usually propane, green gas or CO2 — to propel the BB. There are two main types: Gas Blowback (GBB) and Non-Blowback. Both offer strong, consistent performance, and GBB models add a realistic recoil action that many players prefer. The ongoing cost is the main consideration, since you'll need a regular supply of gas cans or CO2 cartridges from our Airsoft Accessories range. It's also worth noting that green gas performance drops in cold weather, so CO2 is often the better choice for winter game days. The same systems are used across our gas-powered Airsoft Shotguns.

SPRING AIRSOFT PISTOLS

Spring-powered Airsoft Pistols use the same manually compressed spring system to propel the BB. They're single-shot, with the slide racked by hand before each shot — releasing the spring drives a piston forward and creates the air pressure that pushes the BB out of the barrel. Simple, affordable and hard to break, they're an ideal first airsoft pistol. With no batteries, gas or CO2 needed, they're low-maintenance and inexpensive to run, making them well suited to casual shooting and target practice. Many players also keep one as a lightweight backup sidearm.

GAS AIRSOFT PISTOLS

Gas Airsoft Pistols run on compressed gas, typically green gas, propane or CO2, and are favoured for their realistic operation and shooting experience. They come in two forms: Gas Blowback (GBB) and Non-Blowback (NBB). GBB pistols replicate the recoil and slide movement of a real firearm for maximum realism, while NBB models prioritise gas efficiency and quieter operation. Both deliver strong performance, realistic handling and fast follow-up shots. As with gas rifles, you'll need a steady supply of gas or CO2 cartridges, which adds to the running cost over time.
